what is net working capital

The sum of all current assets and liabilities is called net working capital. It can be used to assess the short-term liquidity and to get a general idea of how well the company's management is able to use assets efficiently.

The net working capital can be used to determine the company's ability to grow quickly. It may be able to scale up quickly if it has sufficient cash reserves. A tight working capital situation can make it very unlikely that a business will be able to grow at a rapid pace. The ability to grow can be measured by the length of accounts receivable payments terms. This means that customers are able to collect cash before they need to pay suppliers.
